It's a sign of how much hip-hop has changed that Slick Rick was once called misogynist for 'Treat Her Like a Prostitute.' Such charges once obscured our appreciation of his incredible storytelling on The Great Adventures. 'Children's Story' is a hoodlum tale that is both funny and tragic. He imagines prison rape on 'The Moment I Feared' -- a scenario no rapper would touch today, at least not in the first person -- and gets the cooties on 'Indian Girl.' Nearly every story, from 'Hey Young World' to 'Teenage Love,' is a revelatory look into the '80s B-boy id, a scary and wonderful place to be.

No MC had ever dared go as far on record as Rick, and the tracks in question haven't really lost much of their power to offend, or at least raise eyebrows. The notorious 'Treat Her Like a Prostitute' is the prime suspect, undermining well-intentioned advice (don't trust too quickly) with cynical, often degrading portrayals of women.

That's especially true on the tragic 'Children's Story,' in which a teenage robber's increasingly desperate blunders lead to his destruction. In the end, is simply too good not to deserve the countless samples and homages by everyone from to.

Have you listened to the artist before? Explain why you like it or why you don't.

Slick Rick always manages to stay entertaining with a variety of stories. The Bomb Squad, I believe, produces some of the songs on here, who is very underappreciated on this subreddit. Overall, this album is a must listen classic which is one of the best 80s hip hop albums I've heard. You won't be disappointed. Bought the cd and gave it a listen yesterday. I knew he was the creator of Children's Story that Blackstar referenced and The Rulers Back thay Jay Z references but didn't realize he did 'the world is yours' so that's cool. His story telling ability is fantastic, his flow engages you so well that you keep up with the story.

Maybe because that kind of flow and intonation has become synonymous with 'White Politician tries to rap to appeal to a demographic', but my brain can't listen to Slick Rick anymore without being reminded of two decades of bad parodies. His storytelling is second-to-none, his persona reminds me so much of Rick Flair, and the sound is good for what it is, but man, it's been ruined for me and I hate that. I first got this album around 2008, when I was around 15. Obviously it sounds completely different to anything that's dropped since I've been a hip-hop fan, and Slick Rick was an absolute revelation to me. I've never replayed rap music just to figure out what happened in a story before.

At a 1984 talent showcase he entered, Rick met. Impressed by Rick's talent, Doug made him a member of his Get Fresh Crew (which also included DJs Chill Will and Barry Bee). Doug's beatbox and Rick's fresh flow turned 'The Show'/'La Di Da Di' into an international anthem that turned rap music on its head, according to AllMusic's Steve Huey, and became the launching pad for 'Hip Hop's greatest storyteller.' Initial fame [ ] His career began in late 1985; Walters first gained success in the rap industry after joining 's Get Fresh Crew, using the stage name MC Ricky D. He was featured on the single ' and its even more popular, ', which featured Walters' rapping over Doug E.

But there's also a dark side to -- namely its vulgarity and off-handed misogyny. No MC had ever dared go as far on record as, and the tracks in question haven't really lost much of their power to offend, or at least raise eyebrows. Respected by many, disrespected by many, and respectful of both.
