Dear Friends, Here is second part of this tutorial series that is How to use hyper-terminal and serial communication with FPGA device using RS232 protocol. In this video we take the screen shot of our laptop when we make all the settings for serial communication. This video contains details that how to use hyper terminal, how to change settings to receive or transmit data at a particular baud rate, check for drivers, and others settings like parity bit, stop bit etc. After making all the required settings we receive the data from FPGA device and we will see that data on our computer screen.

Imagine my surprise almost two years ago when I decided to be one of the first to deploy Windows Vista on one our companies laptops from our Tech Net subscription during the weekend. I arrived on site to install and configure some Cisco routers and booted up the laptop with Windows Vista Business edition. I made my serial connections to the router and was already to go. I then began searching for the Hyperterm program to gain access to the Cisco routers. After a few minutes of fumbling in front of one of our larger customers, I finally searched the the Help looking for the Hyperterm program. I finally found a blurb stating the Hyperterm had been removed from Windows Vista.

To enable logging, follow these steps before you open your connection: • Select Logging from the category list on the left. • Choose your desired logging method (All session output, printable output, etc) • Enter a file name. • Select the file handling settings. • Open your connection.

Step – 7 b Choose the receiving protocol whatever your device support, see attached screen shot. Step – 8 If you want to send a file, then select “Send file” option and sending protocol.

HI, First check whether your PC has a serial port or not. If not then you have to use an USB to RS232 converter cable. Install the driver from the cd of USB-2-RS232 converter into your PC. It’s provide a virtual serial port to use. Now connect RS232 part to your device and USB part to your PC.

You should be able to find hypertrm.exe in C: Program Files Windows NT and hypertrm.dll in C: Windows System32. If you have the Windows XP CD, you should be able to find both of these files in the i386 directory on the CD. So that’s about it! Even though HyperTerminal is no longer in Windows 7/8/10, it’s really not needed since you have a lot of great alternatives like Putty, etc. If you want it simply because you’ve been using it for a long time, either download the Private Edition or copy the files from XP.

It also is an xterm terminal emulator. This is probably my favorite alternative to HyperTerminal. Original XP HyperTerminal If you just can’t live without the original HyperTerminal in Windows XP, you can actually extract two files from your XP installation and copy them over to Windows 7/8/10. The two files you will need are hypertrm.dll and hypertrm.exe. Simply copy those files into any directory on your machine and it will work.

Power up the weight machine and open a hyper-terminal or any other serial port utility or software provided by the machine vendor and start the communication. If you’re looking for a free and solid application to use for your serial COM connections, try PuTTY. It’s free for commercial and private use, and takes up a mere 444KB of disk space. The latest PuTTY version can be downloaded here: Windows Vista and Windows 7 only support the private edition of HyperTerminal. Windows 7 does not even ship with HyperTerminal.

Even though HyperTerminal is no longer in Windows 7/8/10, it’s really not needed since you have a lot of great alternatives like Putty, etc. If you want it simply because you’ve been using it for a long time, either download the Private Edition or copy the files from XP.

Power up the weight machine and open a hyper-terminal or any other serial port utility or software provided by the machine vendor and start the communication. Configure serial port properties according the user manual of your weight machine.

To learn more about using WRS, simply open a command prompt and type in winrs /? It’s basically a SSH replacement that allows remote command line access over an encrypted connection. It also uses the SOAP protocol. You can also check out the on winrs that gives you some examples.

Now that June 30, 2008 has passed and most of all Windows XP cannot be purchased (based on licensing agreements) will they be allowed to downgrade to Windows XP A few weeks ago, I had a customer that wanted Windows 2003 server, not Windows 2008 and I had to perform a similiar downgrade (Windows 2003 media and a Windows 2008 license) William.

The solution: There is an easy way to activate or show the Hyper terminal in windows 7,8, 10. Just go to a computer that is still using Windows XP, then Copy the two files associated with hyper terminal, hypertrm.exe and hypertrm.dll • The location of files (in Windows XP): C: Program Files Windows NT hypertrm.exe C: WINDOWS system32 hypertrm.dll • Then save it to your computer Windows 7,8,10 (create a new folder and paste those 2 files ).

Serial Communication using Putty Step – 10 Double click on downloaded ‘Putty.exe’, you will see a window like this: Step – 11 Select ‘serial’, insert com port and baud rate value and click on ‘Serial’ (Left pan), you will see a window look like this: Step – 12 Enter all the setting according your device and then click on open, Step -13 After clicking on ‘open’, you will see a window like this, now you are ready to communicate with your device. Putty is much more than a simple serial port communication tool, I will cover more on Putty in my future post. You can also check out the on winrs that gives you some examples. Phone and Modem Options If you were using HyperTerminal to troubleshoot modems, you can now use Phone and Modem Options to do this. Go to Control Panel, click on Hardware and Sounds and then click on Phone and Modem Options. If you don’t see it there, click on the drop down by View items and choose Small icons or Large icons. All you have to do is provide information about the Country/Region, Area Code, Carrier Code, and Outside Dial Number to access the dialog box. Once you do that, you can troubleshoot your modem in Windows 7 or Vista. HyperTerminal Alternatives If you don’t want to use all these alternative methods, you can still use alternative programs for HyperTerminal.

If you find yourself using PuTTY quite extensively, you could save settings to different profiles for fast future usage. To create a profile for your settings: • Make sure you have the settings you require. • Enter a profile name under Saved Sessions. • Click the Save button. On your next PuTTY session, you can load your profile by selecting it from the list and clicking the Load button. Logging is also a great feature that PuTTY provides. It lets you output your entire session to a log file.

Step – 6 a By default you wont see the character you type,but if want to see the character you type that is going to received by your device then you have to click on ‘properties’, you will see the window like below: Step – 6 b Click on “settings”, you will see the window like below, click on ‘ASCII Setup’. Step-6 c Select “Echo typed character locally”, see screen shot below: Step – 7 a If you want to receive a file from your device the click on ‘settings’, then select ‘Receive file’ option. If you need a good HyperTerminal program for Windows 10, then this is your best option. – TeraTerm is an open-source terminal emulator and SSH module that supports IPv6, SSH1, SSH2, Telnet, serial ports, and file transfer protocols (XMODEM, Kermit, ZMODEM, B-PLUS, etc). – Another free Telnet and SSH implementation for Windows. It also is an xterm terminal emulator. This is probably my favorite alternative to HyperTerminal.
